COALITION POUR LA DÉFENSE DES DROITS HUMAINS VIVANT DANS LES CAMPS DE RÉFUGIÉS (CDH/VICAR)

Refugees in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, have formally submitted a petition to the UNHCR and the international community, denouncing severe humanitarian challenges and calling for urgent intervention. The petition highlights forced integration, severe food shortages, limited access to clean water, inadequate healthcare, and obstacles to education and employment, which collectively endanger the lives and dignity of thousands of displaced persons.

The petition strongly rejects forced integration, as refugees fear losing their identity and access to essential services such as food, healthcare, and education. Simultaneously, malnutrition and hunger have worsened, particularly among pregnant women, children, and the elderly, exacerbated by cuts to cash-based aid and critical food items.

Access to clean water and healthcare services remains highly inadequate. Frequent breakdowns of boreholes force refugees to dig in dry riverbeds for water, while misdiagnoses, lack of trained medical staff, high maternal mortality, and denial of medical referrals endanger lives. The absence of burial sites adds to the emotional trauma of families grieving lost loved ones.

Refugees also face barriers to education and employment, including unaffordable school fees and discriminatory practices that limit equal pay and job opportunities. The petition demands immediate improvements in food, water, healthcare, education, employment equality, and access to resettlement as a durable solution. UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi is urged to visit Kakuma, and refugees pledge continued advocacy until their rights and dignity are fully protected.
