Violence Against Burundian Refugees in Nduta Camp Rekindles Fears of Past Atrocities

The Coalition for the Defence of Human Rights Living in Refugee Camps has documented a serious incident of violence against Burundian refugees at the Nduta Refugee Camp, raising urgent concerns about the safety and protection of displaced populations.

This development follows earlier warnings issued by CDH VICAR that, without immediate intervention, the situation in refugee camps could deteriorate into life-threatening conditions similar to those witnessed during the Mtabila refugee camp incident.

On Sunday, March 19, 2026, several refugees were reportedly injured by a camp management official while attempting to access water outside the restricted area known as the “Departure” zone. This area has increasingly been described by refugees as functioning under conditions of confinement.

Access to basic necessities such as water has become a critical issue within the camp, particularly for those confined to controlled zones. The reported use of force against individuals seeking essential resources highlights the severity of the humanitarian situation.

Witness accounts indicate that the injured refugees were attempting to meet fundamental survival needs, underscoring the disproportionate nature of the response and the absence of protective safeguards for vulnerable individuals.

This incident contributes to a broader pattern of tension and alleged abuses within the camp, where restrictions on movement and access to services are intensifying the vulnerability of refugees.

The parallels drawn with past events reinforce fears that continued inaction could lead to further escalation, including serious harm or loss of life among refugee populations.

In response, CDH VICAR calls for an immediate and independent investigation into the incident, accountability for those responsible, and urgent measures to ensure safe access to basic services for all refugees. The organization also urges the international community to act decisively to prevent further violations and uphold the fundamental rights and dignity of refugees.
