COALITION POUR LA DÉFENSE DES DROITS HUMAINS VIVANT DANS LES CAMPS DE RÉFUGIÉS (CDH/VICAR)

CDH/VICAR is deeply concerned following the disappearance of a Burundian refugee child, Chabani, in the New Congo neighborhood of the Nakivale refugee camp in Uganda. The incident occurred on Saturday and has triggered alarm and distress within the refugee community.

The following day, a Congolese refugee woman from the Babembe group was arrested by Ugandan authorities. She is accused of concealing parts of the child’s body in her bag, alongside her children. This situation has raised serious concerns about both the protection of refugees and the treatment of individuals in vulnerable circumstances.

CDH/VICAR emphasizes that the incident highlights the urgent need for improved child protection and safety measures within refugee camps. Families living in these camps already face precarious conditions, and cases of disappearances and arrests exacerbate fear and insecurity among residents.

The coalition calls on the Ugandan authorities and humanitarian actors to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, ensuring that justice is served while upholding the rights and dignity of all refugees. CDH/VICAR also urges increased monitoring and protective measures to prevent future incidents in Nakivale and other refugee settlements.
