CDH/VICAR Condemns Mass Demolition of Shelters in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp

CDH/VICAR expresses grave concern over the situation unfolding in the Nyarugusu refugee camp in Tanzania. On 31 December 2025, nearly all refugee shelters in Zone 13 were completely demolished. Credible information indicates that Zone 12 is expected to be targeted next, raising fears of an expanded operation that will further displace already vulnerable populations.

As a direct result of these demolitions, children, elderly persons, and other vulnerable refugees are now exposed to heavy rainfall without any shelter. Families have lost their only protection against the elements, increasing risks of illness, trauma, and further humanitarian suffering at a time when access to basic services is already severely limited.

According to information documented by CDH/VICAR, these actions appear to form part of a broader strategy aimed at coercing Burundian refugees into registering for return, rather than ensuring their protection. The destruction of shelters as a means of pressure constitutes a serious violation of the right to asylum, the principle of non-refoulement, and fundamental standards of human dignity.

Equally alarming is the complete silence of UNHCR and other human rights organizations operating in Tanzania in the face of these abuses. CDH/VICAR strongly condemns this inaction and urgently calls on Tanzanian authorities, UNHCR, and the international community to immediately halt the demolitions, provide emergency shelter, and ensure the protection of refugees. States must uphold their commitments.
